Breathing Techniques for Stress Relief: The Science Behind Sudarshan Kriya
Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique that's part of the Art of Living Foundation's Happiness Program. The steps are typically taught in a structured manner during the program. Here's a general outline:
Ujjayi Breathing:
This involves deep, diaphragmatic breathing through the nose, with a slight constriction at the back of the throat to create an audible whispering sound.
Bhastrika:
Also known as "Bellows Breath," this involves rapid and forceful inhalations and exhalations through the nose, creating a rhythm of breath.
Om Chanting:
Participants may engage in chanting the universal sound "Om" three times, with each iteration at a different pitch—low, medium, and high.
Sudarshan Kriya:
This is the core practice, which involves a specific sequence of rhythmic breathing patterns. The three parts are:
Ujjayi Breath:
Similar to the first step, participants engage in slow, deep breaths through the nose.
Bhastrika:
Similar to the second step, participants perform rapid, forceful breaths.
Shitali Karana:
This is a cooling breath exercise where participants inhale through the curled tongue or open mouth and exhale through the nose.
Silent Meditation: Following the active breathing practices, participants may engage in a period of silent meditation, focusing on the breath or a chosen point of concentration.
Sankalpa (Resolve): Participants conclude the practice by setting a positive intention or resolve for themselves
